Dongpirang and the Tongyeong Cable Car

Getting to the start

Tongyeong has no railway station. The standard route is an express bus from Seoul Nambu or Central City to Tongyeong bus terminal; you can also come by intercity bus from Busan. From the terminal take a city bus or taxi to Dongpirang. The cable car stops running in strong wind, so check the day's service before you plan around it.

   Dongpirang Mural Village

   A hillside neighbourhood that was slated for demolition until murals began going up in 2007 and it was kept. The lanes are narrow and full of steps; from the top you look down on Gangguan harbour and the boats tied up there. The murals are repainted every few years, so they may not match older photographs. These are the walls of occupied houses, so do not point a camera at the windows.

   Take a bus or taxi from Gangguan, below Dongpirang, to the cable car's lower station; it is too far to walk. Note that from the upper station there is still a ten to twenty minute boardwalk climb to the summit viewpoint, so allow for it.

   Tongyeong Cable Car

   Donam-dong, Tongyeong · 2h

   A cable car that climbs most of the way up Mireuksan. From the upper station a boardwalk adds another ten to twenty minutes on foot, and from the top the islands of the Hallyeo archipelago, Hansando among them, stack up in layers. Service stops in strong wind or fog, so check before setting out. Weekend queues are long.
