Around 700 hanok houses, the largest such cluster in the country. Unlike Bukchon in Seoul it was developed commercially, so the lanes are lined with shops and hanbok rentals — and crowds to match. Come early or on a weekday and it is a different place.

Suncheonman Bay Wetland
A coastal wetland of reed beds and tidal flats, the largest in the country and a Ramsar site. A boardwalk cuts through the reeds, and from the Yongsan viewpoint you see the round channels the tide has cut into the mud. The viewpoint is over an hour there and back on foot.

Odongdo Island
An island you walk to rather than sail to: a breakwater connects it to the mainland. The causeway runs 768m, and if that is too far a road train called the Camellia Train covers the same route. The whole island is camellia forest, in flower from late winter into early spring. The loop path ends at a lighthouse with a viewing platform.

Yeosu Maritime Cable Car
A cable car strung over the water between Jasan Park and Dolsan Park. There are glass-floored crystal cabins and ordinary ones, with a longer queue for the glass. A one-way ticket leaves you walking down the far side, so decide return or one-way before you buy. After dark you ride over the lights of the city and Dolsan Bridge.

Dolsan Park
The hill that gives the widest view of what people mean by Yeosu at night: Dolsan Bridge, Janggundo island, and the city lights beyond, all in one frame. It is better from dusk than in daylight, and since the cable car's Dolsan station is right beside it, many people ride up and simply wait for the sun to go down. It is windy, so bring a layer.

Juknokwon Bamboo Forest
The quickest way to understand why Damyang is called bamboo country. Eight paths thread through the grove, and any of them loops back in thirty minutes to an hour. The entrance is a flight of steps and leaves you short of breath; above that it levels out. When the wind moves, the stems knock together and the sound does not stop.

Metasequoia-lined Road
Metasequoias planted as street trees in the 1970s have grown until they arch over from both sides. It was a national highway until a bypass took the traffic, leaving it to walkers. The avenue runs about 2km, an hour there and back. In summer the canopy closes into shade; in late autumn the needles turn rust and then drop. The central stretch charges admission.

Boseong Green Tea Field
Tea bushes planted along the contours of a hillside, so the slope reads as green stripes winding upward. That is the picture Boseong is known for. From the entrance an avenue of cedars leads to a stair, and only from the viewpoint at the top does the pattern resolve. The steps are steep. The field is green year round, but the colour is sharpest around May when the new leaf comes.

Asia Culture Center
A cultural complex built almost entirely underground, leaving the surface as parkland. Several halls handle art, performance and media from across Asia, with free zones mixed in among ticketed shows. The old South Jeolla provincial office, central to the 1980 Gwangju Uprising, is preserved on the site, so the history of the ground comes with the visit. The children's centre books separately.

Yangnim-dong Historic Village
A neighbourhood shaped in the early twentieth century by missionaries, who built Western houses, churches and schools here. Red brick from that period and hanok stand in the same lanes, and because the ground rises and falls the view changes at every corner. In the alley known as Penguin Village, residents have fixed collected household objects to the walls. People live here, so keep your voice down.

Gwanghalluwon Garden
The Joseon-era pavilion and garden known as the setting of the Chunhyang story. Three islands sit in the pond and an arched stone bridge crosses to them; the layout was conceived as the Milky Way brought down to earth. You may climb into the pavilion and sit, and an hour is enough for the full circuit. Cherry trees ring the pond in spring and lotus fills it in summer.

Jeondong Catholic Church
A brick church completed in 1914 on the site of Korea's first Catholic martyrdoms. It stands one road across from the main gate of Gyeonggijeon, so tiled roofs and a Romanesque bell tower land in the same frame. Mass is still said here: keep quiet inside, and expect access to be closed during services.

A Joseon-era clan village inside a bend of the Nakdong River, listed by UNESCO. It is not a reconstruction — most of the houses are lived in. Climb Buyongdae on the far bank and you see how completely the river wraps the village.

Jagalchi Market
Korea's largest fish market. The ground floor of the seafront hall is lined with tanks; you pick a fish there and it is prepared upstairs for you to eat. Outside, the stalls run a long way along the shore road, and that side is louder and more of a spectacle. Prices are often settled by haggling, so ask before you commit. Mornings are busiest and it tends to close early.

Busan Tower
An observation tower on the hilltop of Yongdusan Park. You can reach the park by escalator from the shopping lanes of Gwangbok-ro, so the climb is optional. From the deck you take in the north harbour, Yeongdo island and the bridge that runs between them, with the roofs of Jagalchi Market below. Crowds build from dusk. The park is free and only the tower is ticketed.

Gwangalli Beach
The sand is shorter than Haeundae's, but Gwangan Bridge spans the view head-on, which is why this beach is known for its night. The bridge lights come on after sunset and the seating runs the length of the sand. The lanes behind are solid cafes and raw-fish restaurants, so it fills up after dark rather than before. On drone light show nights it is very crowded.

Dongpirang Mural Village
A hillside neighbourhood that was slated for demolition until murals began going up in 2007 and it was kept. The lanes are narrow and full of steps; from the top you look down on Gangguan harbour and the boats tied up there. The murals are repainted every few years, so they may not match older photographs. These are the walls of occupied houses, so do not point a camera at the windows.

Tongyeong Cable Car
A cable car that climbs most of the way up Mireuksan. From the upper station a boardwalk adds another ten to twenty minutes on foot, and from the top the islands of the Hallyeo archipelago, Hansando among them, stack up in layers. Service stops in strong wind or fog, so check before setting out. Weekend queues are long.

Kim Kwang-seok Road
A lane of roughly 350m beside Bangcheon Market, in the neighbourhood where the singer Kim Kwang-seok grew up, painted with his face and his songs. Lyrics are lettered along the walls and a small stage partway down plays his music. The road itself takes half an hour, but most people carry on into the market and the cafe streets toward Suseong Bridge.

Seomun Market
Daegu's great market, running since the Joseon dynasty and still built around wholesale fabric and clothing. What draws visitors is the night market at the far end: stalls line the main road after dark and people eat standing up, on flat dumplings, nureun-guksu and other Daegu dishes. The night market generally opens in the evening and closes around midnight, and feels nothing like the daytime one.

Seokguram Grotto
A man-made grotto of stacked granite on the flank of Tohamsan, inscribed by UNESCO together with Bulguksa. It is about ten minutes on a mountain path from the car park to the entrance. The seated Buddha is viewed through a glass wall and photography inside is not allowed. The chamber faces east: it was built so that the light of sunrise would reach in.

Seongsan Ilchulbong
A volcanic crater that rose straight out of the sea, listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Twenty to thirty minutes of steps put a 600-metre-wide crater under your feet. It is famous for sunrise, as the name says — which means sleeping nearby.

Manjanggul Cave
A lava tube left by flowing magma, part of the UNESCO natural heritage listing. The open kilometre ends at a lava column 7.6 metres tall. Inside it stays between 11 and 21°C year-round and the floor is wet and slippery — bring a layer and decent shoes.

Hyeopjae Beach
Reckoned the brightest water on Jeju's west coast. Crushed shell in the sand turns the sea emerald, and the island of Biyangdo sits square on the horizon. The water is shallow enough that you can wade a long way out and still be knee-deep.

Cheonjiyeon Falls
A waterfall you can walk to from the middle of Seogwipo town. The path from the car park is flat the whole way, which makes it one of the easier sights on Jeju. It is lit after dark, so a late visit works. Subtropical forest fills the gorge and keeps it cool even in summer.

Jusangjeolli Cliff
A cliff of hexagonal columns, formed where lava hit the sea and cooled. Each column stands several times a person's height, which photographs rarely convey. Viewing is from a deck only — there is no way down to the water. Rough days are the better ones to come.

A headland of open grassland running out into the sea. Walk to the end for the lighthouse; Seongsan Ilchulbong stays in view beside you the whole way. There is almost no shade, so midsummer afternoons are hard going, and the wind will take a hat.

Bijarim Forest
A forest of some 2,800 nutmeg yews, most of them five to eight centuries old. The paths are laid with red volcanic scoria that crunches underfoot. They are flat enough for a pushchair, and the canopy is dense enough that rain barely reaches you.

A narrow path threads along tuff cliffs that run into the sea below Sanbangsan. This is Jeju's oldest volcanic formation, its layered sediment standing up like a wall. It closes often, depending on tide and swell, so check whether it is open before making the trip.

Dongmun Market
Jeju's largest permanent market, in the middle of Jeju City. Island produce — tangerines, tilefish, hallabong — is gathered in one place, which is why people come here on the way home. A night market opens separately in the evening. It is close to the airport, so it slots into a first or last day.

Seongyojang House
A late-Joseon aristocratic house lived in by the same family for close to three hundred years. Because it is a home and not a palace, the rooms and courtyards are sized to people — which makes it read completely differently from the royal compounds. The pavilion over the pond is at its best in summer. Descendants still look after it.

Busosanseong Fortress
The fortress that guarded Sabi, Baekje's last capital, and part of the UNESCO-listed Baekje Historic Areas. It reads more as forest path than rampart; a full circuit takes a little over an hour. Nakhwaam cliff and Goransa temple, both above the Baengma River, are inside it. A pleasure boat leaves from the riverbank.

Gungnamji Pond
The oldest man-made pond recorded in Korea, named in the twelfth-century Samguk Sagi. Lotus beds now fill the ground around it, so mid-July to early August — when they flower — is overwhelming, and the rest of the year it is a quiet walk. It is lit at night.

Namhansanseong Fortress
A UNESCO World Heritage site where twelve kilometres of wall follow the ridgeline. Do not try to walk all of it — the hour from the South Gate to the West Gate is enough to put the whole south of Seoul below you. A village and a royal residence still stand inside the walls, so it reads less as a fortress than as a town on a mountain.

Royal Tombs of Gongju
The tomb of King Muryeong of Baekje and his queen. Found unlooted in 1971, it is the only Three Kingdoms royal tomb whose occupant is confirmed — by the stone tablet laid inside. The chamber is now closed to protect it, and a replica hall beside it reproduces the interior. What was found inside is at the Gongju National Museum.

Most of what came out of King Muryeong's tomb is here — the gold crown ornaments and the stone beast that guarded the chamber are the pieces to look for. Come after the tomb itself and the order makes sense: what you saw as an empty chamber gets filled in here.

Magoksa Temple
One of the seven Buddhist mountain monasteries inscribed by UNESCO as Sansa. A stream loops around the compound in a valley of Taehwasan, and you cross a bridge to reach the main hall's courtyard. It has long been known for its spring green. Kim Gu, the independence leader, was ordained here and lived here for a time.

Anmok Beach
The beach that made Gangneung a coffee town. It began with a row of coffee vending machines on the sand; roasteries moved in one by one, and the result is the coffee street you see now. Most seats face straight out to sea, which is why one cup tends to last a long time. The marina is right next door.
