Odongdo and Yeosu by Night

Getting to the start

KTX from Yongsan to Yeosu Expo, then walk to Odongdo — the island entrance is close to the station, so drop your bags and start. Do not reverse the order: Dolsan Park only becomes the point after dark, so keep it last.

   Odongdo Island

   Yeosu · 2h

   An island you walk to rather than sail to: a breakwater connects it to the mainland. The causeway runs 768m, and if that is too far a road train called the Camellia Train covers the same route. The whole island is camellia forest, in flower from late winter into early spring. The loop path ends at a lighthouse with a viewing platform.

2. Walk12m

   Walk back down the Odongdo causeway and up the hill on your left to the Jasan Park station. It is uphill but short. Decide here whether to buy a return or a one-way: with a one-way you will need a bus or taxi back from the Dolsan side.

   Yeosu Maritime Cable Car

   Jasan Park, Yeosu · 1h

   A cable car strung over the water between Jasan Park and Dolsan Park. There are glass-floored crystal cabins and ordinary ones, with a longer queue for the glass. A one-way ticket leaves you walking down the far side, so decide return or one-way before you buy. After dark you ride over the lights of the city and Dolsan Bridge.

   The cable car crosses the water to the Dolsan station, and the park is right beside it — nothing to transfer to, nothing to walk. Arrive about forty minutes before sunset and you get both the sun going down and the bridge lights coming on.

   Dolsan Park

   Dolsan, Yeosu · 1h

   The hill that gives the widest view of what people mean by Yeosu at night: Dolsan Bridge, Janggundo island, and the city lights beyond, all in one frame. It is better from dusk than in daylight, and since the cable car's Dolsan station is right beside it, many people ride up and simply wait for the sun to go down. It is windy, so bring a layer.
