Namhansanseong Fortress

A UNESCO World Heritage site where twelve kilometres of wall follow the ridgeline. A village still lives inside it, so it reads less as a fortress than as a town on a mountain.

From Sanseong Station (Line 8) Exit 2, take bus 9 or 52 and get off at the Namhansanseong roundabout; buses 9-1 and 53 also run at weekends. The roundabout sits in the middle of the village inside the walls, so you can set off along the rampart in any direction from there.

    Gwangju, Gyeonggi · 3h

A UNESCO World Heritage site where twelve kilometres of wall follow the ridgeline. Do not try to walk all of it — the hour from the South Gate to the West Gate is enough to put the whole south of Seoul below you. A village and a royal residence still stand inside the walls, so it reads less as a fortress than as a town on a mountain.
