The route
- 1
Jongmyo Shrine
Jongno 3-ga · 1h 30mThe royal ancestral shrine of the Joseon dynasty, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Unlike the palaces it is almost undecorated — one long roof running on and on — and that restraint is the whole point. On weekdays entry is by timed guided tour only; you can walk in freely on Saturdays and public holidays.

2Sewoon Plaza
Euljiro · 1hThe 1968 Sewoon Sangga arcade, reworked into an elevated walkway and plaza. From the roof deck you get the roofs of Jongmyo and Namsan in one frame. The shops inside close on Sundays and holidays, but the walkway, plaza and viewing deck stay open all year.
