Gangneung: Ojukheon and the Beach

Getting to the start

Take the KTX to Gangneung from Seoul Station or Cheongnyangni. City buses connect the station to both Ojukheon and Gyeongpo, and the two to each other. Check the route at the station.

   Ojukheon

   Gangneung · 1h

   The house where the Joseon scholar Yi I was born, and among the oldest surviving residential buildings in Korea. Black bamboo surrounds it, which is where the name comes from. The city museum shares the grounds.

   Twenty minutes or so by city bus toward Gyeongpo. Get off by the lake and follow it to the sea — the lake and the beach are about ten minutes apart on foot.

   Gyeongpo Beach

   Gangneung · 2h

   One of the widest sand beaches on the east coast, running 1.8km. Gyeongpo Lake sits directly behind it, so you walk the sea and the lake in one go. Packed in summer; nearly empty the rest of the year.
